UltraTech Cement Scales Up Electric Truck Usage to Reduce CO2 Emissions

UltraTech Cement, India’s largest cement and ready-mix concrete company, is significantly scaling up the use of electric trucks in its logistics operations. The company plans to deploy electric trucks for the transportation of 75,000 metric tons of clinker per month from its Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh to its Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra, a distance of approximately 350 kilometers. This initiative is expected to reduce transport emissions by 17,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

UltraTech Cement’s decision to scale up the use of electric trucks is a strategic move aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable logistics practices. The company plans to deploy electric trucks for the transportation of 75,000 metric tons of clinker per month from its Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh to its Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra. This route covers a distance of approximately 350 kilometers, making it a significant logistical challenge.

The deployment of electric trucks offers several benefits for UltraTech Cement and the environment. One of the key advantages is the significant reduction in CO2 emissions, which aligns with UltraTech’s commitment to achieving its Net Zero goal by 2050. The use of electric trucks also reduces the company’s reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to energy security and reducing operational costs. Additionally, electric trucks offer lower maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel trucks, as they have fewer moving parts and require less frequent servicing.

The deployment of electric trucks also enhances UltraTech’s corporate image, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. By adopting electric vehicles for its logistics operations, UltraTech is setting a positive example for other companies in the cement industry and beyond, encouraging the wider adoption of sustainable transportation solutions.

The successful pilot project that commenced in January 2024 marked a significant milestone in UltraTech Cement’s journey towards sustainable logistics. During the pilot, UltraTech introduced five electric trucks from IPLTech Electric Private Limited to transport clinker from its Dhar Cement Works to its Dhule Cement Works. The positive results from the pilot, including significant reductions in CO2 emissions and operational costs, have encouraged UltraTech to scale up the use of electric trucks.

The company plans to deploy electric trucks for the transportation of 75,000 metric tons of clinker per month on this route, reducing transport emissions by 17,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. In addition to scaling up the current route, UltraTech also proposes to conduct another pilot for the transport of clinker between two other manufacturing units. These initiatives demonstrate UltraTech’s proactive approach to adopting innovative and sustainable logistics solutions, contributing to its overall sustainability goals.
